How to Make a Survachka

Introduction

The survachka is a traditional Bulgarian symbol of health and fertility, used in customs for welcoming the New Year. In this article, we will show you how to make your own survachka using materials at hand. The process is easy and fun, and the final result will be a beautiful and unique accessory for the holidays.

Necessary Materials

• Floral wire – in different sizes
• Wire sticks
• Yarn – in colors of your choice
• Wooden beads
• Stringing cord for beads
• Decorative coins
• Small styrofoam peppers
• Satin ribbons
• Hot glue and glue gun

Steps for Making a Survachka

1. Shaping the Frame

• Take thicker floral wire for the base of the survachka.
• For the upper part of the survachka, use two thinner sticks and bend them into a circle.
• Stabilize the sticks where they connect to the base by wrapping them with wire sticks to create a stable frame.
• For the lower part of the survachka, take 4-5 longer wire sticks to make a larger circle. Bend them in the same way as the upper part and secure them with wire sticks.

2. Wrapping with Yarn

• Choose a color of yarn that you like and that is suitable for the New Year holidays.
• Apply a little hot glue at the beginning and start wrapping the yarn around the frame until you cover it completely.
• If the yarn runs out, cut it and start a new section, again using glue to secure it.
• If desired, you can wrap another yarn color over the main color to create colorful stripes for an additional accent.

3. Adding Decorative Elements

• Yarn flowers:
  • Wrap yarn around two of your fingers, tie it in the middle, and spread out the ends to shape a flower.
  • Place a small half pearl in the center and secure it with hot glue.
  • Attach the finished flowers to the survachka at the places where the wire sticks intersect.
