Matte and Rubberised Glass Beads and Pearls
Matte and rubberised beads are glass beads with a matte, non-shiny surface. On matte ones the effect comes from treating the glass itself; on rubberised ones, from a soft coating over it. They suit jewellery and decorations where you want an interesting texture and an understated look.

Three kinds, three different effects
- Matte — the glass surface is treated so it’s smooth but not glossy. The colour looks softer and richer, and on transparent beads the light passes through with a slightly frosted effect.
- Rubberised — glass beads with a soft coating that’s pleasant and velvety to the touch. The colours are solid and bright, and some models have added drawings or coloured details.
- Matte pearls — glass beads with a pearl coating that gives them a soft, mother-of-pearl sheen. They’re more understated than classic glossy pearls and combine easily with other beads.
A practical tip:
Rubberised beads are more sensitive to rubbing. If you’re making a piece for frequent wear, keep them away from rough fabrics, perfume and solvents to protect the coating.
What they’re used for
- Boho and ethnic jewellery. Matte glass pairs naturally with leather, linen, wood and other materials with a natural texture.
- Everyday bracelets. The muted surface is a good choice when you want a colourful piece without a strong shine.
- Contrast on a strand. Alternate matte and glossy beads in the same colour for an interesting effect made purely by the difference in surface.
- Neon accents. Rubberised models in bright colours suit summer bracelets, accessories and bolder craft projects.
What to combine them with
Matte glass sits well with natural materials like leather cord, cotton and wood. Rubberised beads in bright colours combine most easily with neutral or single-colour elements, so they stay in focus.
